A town meeting committee on spending proposes rules to curb wild cat appropriations. Key points require 25 electors to sign resolutions, 26 days filing, paper ballots on resolutions, and adjourned meetings for large appropriations. Minorities urge public hearings and phased budget timing with joint sessions.
Readers debate the approach to city budgets and a proposed $7 million plant as a test case. Officials cut the budget while pursuing improvements, arguing efficiency pressures may push taxpayers to rethink spending and trigger broader citywide reforms.
A fragment from the Bristol Phoenix notes a building project facing delays due to government red tape. It mentions Senator John O Pastore and Representative Arne Scottland, with acknowledgments for securing funds or permissions in Washington. The garbled text suggests a civic appraisal of bureaucratic obstacles affecting local construction.
A sequence of town events lists various fundraisers and social gatherings from January 25 to February 2 in Bristol including a card party, ham and bean supper, spaghetti supper, a polio drive auction, a Friday dress dinner, and a Rock N Roll dance. The letter to the editor defends press fairness and explains officials’ public service intent while criticizing misperceptions of secrecy.
