A reader describes birds visiting a window feeding shelf after a heavy snow. Downy woodpeckers chickadees sparrows and starlings now approach close to the window and even pull donuts from the shelf. The writer notes annoyed by starlings and a dog named Petey chasing sparrows. They recall past timidity of birds and contrast with present boldness.
Police Chief Anthony J. Ferrara reported at a town council meeting that the Bristol Police Pension fund has nearly doubled in 17 years to about $100,000. Only $53,000 came from police and town inputs via the policemen's ball and a $500 yearly appropriation. The rest comes from dividends and interest, with 2,000 bank shares owned. The council authorized investing $7,200 this year in First National Bank of New York stock, including $4,000 net from the 1953 policemen's ball.
George F. Hibbert, Bristol building inspector for four years, lost a reappointment bid after a 2-2 council vote. John Ligeiro was chosen after Council President Bruno broke the deadlock. Hibbert, appointed in 1949 under a Democratic administration, protested the charge of transportation issues and cited close cooperation with inspector William Sousa.
Lady Baden Powell of England chief guide of world Girl Scouts and founder of the World Scout Movement will address leaders and members in Providence Rhode Island at Veterans Auditorium on Saturday February 7 1926 at 2 pm The Bristol Girl Scout Council ticket chair Mrs Joseph DuPont and council president Mrs Thomas Adams will oversee tickets Mrs Earl G Sturdevant is state ticket chairman for the event.
The Bristol County Dental Society launches a poster contest to promote dental health among fourth to twelfth graders in three towns. Nine $25 Savings Bonds prize, judging by members, entries due January 27, with awards in three grade groups and winners announced February 1 on Dental Health Day. Posters exhibited in local store windows.
Donations to the Civic Industries fund rose to 8495.50 as Mrs. John R Watson announced new contributions from Stanley Livingston, C and A Girls Club, Antonio Mazza, Bristol Furniture Co and others. List includes Miss Alice B Wyatt, Estate of John Mello, Mr. and Mrs. R. T. DeFelice, and several named locals and businesses.
The Scouter's Key, Boy Scout movement top adult award, was given to Howard L House district commissioner during a Bristol district roundtable at Guiteras House. District Chairman Lester M Hood presented it in absence of James M Husband after three years of adult training. House has served Scouts for twenty years and led the monthly roundtable to practical value. He previously received the Silver Beaver Award and is a quotations manager for U S Rubber Bristol plant.
F Harvey Straight of Bristol dies Sunday at the Benjamin Church Home at age 72. Funeral services are tomorrow at 11 am at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. John N Sinclair leading the mass of requiem. Interment in North Burial Ground follows calling hours tonight 7 to 9 at Wilbur Memorial Chapel.
The funeral for Abraham Eisenstadt a Bristol resident and local merchant was held at 10 a.m. at Sugarman Funeral Home Providence with Rabbi Aaron Goldin officiating. Buried at Lincoln Park Cemetery the 68 year old who died Monday after celebrating his birthday was survived by three sons a daughter a brother a sister and four grandchildren. He built a long career from dry goods to owning stores on Hope Street Belvedere Hill and in the 1933 Dimond property.
Troop 3 Boy Scouts, sponsored by the Bristol Rotary Club and led by Scoutmaster George Oliver, met last Thursday in an unheated garage after losing their YMCA basement quarters. The Rotary Youth Committee, led by August Gibbemeyer, has been searching for weeks for a proper room. the former YMCA space was repurposed this fall as a boys’ room.
Snow fell across the eastern states in a multi day storm, bringing heavy accumulations of up to ten inches. Schools closed, but utilities and bus services continued with cautious public cooperation as residents enjoyed sledding and winter activities.
A March of Dimes polio fundraiser features a double header basketball night Monday at 8 pm. Bristol teachers will perform stunts and the Colt Jayvees meet the all tourney YMCA Holiday Basketball lineup. Admission is free with donations to the March of Dimes. auction items encouraged for the February 2 event at Colt High auditorium.
The Bristol Historical Society hosts a display of about 300 Chinese art objects this week. The public may visit daily from 2 30 to 5 and 7 to 9 p m through Saturday. members attended a private showing and tea on Sunday.
The Bristol Rescue Squad rescued a German shepherd owned by Mr and Mrs William Arciero from Collins Pond Greylock Road Sunday around 10 am. Mike Flynn in a rubber suit used a hooked pole to loop the dog’s collar and pull it to safety. Capt Charles Luther Ralph Nash Felix Scott and George Dion assisted.
The town council votes to keep the Wardwell property dump site and seeks April funds to operate it. Proposals include extending use, funding the site, relocating near a remedy, and hiring an attorney to advise on bids and tax implications amid resident complaints from the Veterans Home over smoke.
