Wire Plant Origins Traced to 1863 in Bristol
The United States Rubber Company Bristol plant spans 18 acres with 654000 square feet of floor space and employs 1400. Origin traces to 1863 when the National Rubber Company moved from Providence to Bristol, with earlier Providence beginnings in 1837 as Bourn and Company forging rubber footwear. By 1918 daily output neared 90000 pairs, and during World War I the Bristol works supplied portable communications wire and heavy wires for tanks and missiles. The plant now produces rubber insulated building wires, armored cables, and control cables, drawing power to light a town of about 10843 homes and gas for 13330 homes.
