Bristol Captain Receives Air Medal for New Guinea Service
Captain Peter J. Alfano of Bristol Rhode Island earns the Air Medal for meritorious service in the New Guinea campaign with the 32nd Infantry Division under Major General William H. Gill. He flew 96 missions totaling 40 minutes in hostile weather, performing fire observation reconnaissance and supply work while serving as liaison and artillery air observer. The presentation is scheduled for a later date.

A fire caused by an overheated oil stove gutted the living room at 196 Thames street at 5 30 am today. Furnishings and partitions were damaged while firefighters prevented spread to the second story. Mrs Ade line McKenna and her two sons plus her brother were evacuated and three rooms remain livable.

Rev Hiram G Woolf rector of St Thomas Episcopal Church North Providence spoke at St Michaels Church on Europe during wartime. He served as rector of St Johns Dresden and chaplain to British POWs in Germany before returning to the United States in 1940 and later leading St Pauls in Rome where he was imprisoned as a spy and later pardoned before leaving Italy on May 19 1942. The service drew about 80 people followed by an entertainment program and refreshments.
