Account from the Bombay mail recalls the King Cenric a 1490 ton ship from Liverpool to Bombay. Off the Cape of Good Hope a Northwest gale raged five days washing away hatch entries and gear and venting a crewman overboard. Chief officer Bowyer proposed oil on the water two canvas bags with two gallons each calmed waves several yards from the ship allowing repairs then the bags lasted two days before the gale subsided. London News reports the method succeeded.
