Christmas Eve at St Michael's 1822 Retold
A longtime reader recalls the 1822 Christmas Eve service at St Michael's Church with details on the building, decorations, organist, choir, and a 35 minute sermon by Bishop Griswold, ending with candlelight and carols as bells rang into the night. The piece also notes the schooner George W Whitford bringing oranges cocoanuts and garlic to Providence after a rough voyage. Santa Claus is humorously hinted as having a wife who helps him know wish lists.
