Anthony Brinas of 65 Burton Street retires after 32 years with the post office. He recalls daily chats with neighbors on his Neck route and the hard part of retirement is not seeing the people he served. He began in 1925, initially selling insurance before joining the post office.
The article recalls Bruno's decades of service at the Phoenix Post Office and his active care for customers during wartime. It notes his death in 1947 at age and his retirement October 15 due to illness. He and his wife have three children and four grandchildren, including Pred P. Bruno, a mechanical engineer with General Motors in Bristol Connecticut.
Bristol contractors challenge Maguire survey costs for a 3.1 million sewer extension. Estimates on an eight inch Sowams Road Greenway Drive line range from 5 to 12 dollars per foot, far below engineer figures. Town officials and attorney Capone clash over meeting calls and possible assessments as Feb 25 town meeting nears.
The Zoning Board will again hear Castle Construction Co son Palazini over a storage building near a cement hopper. Neighbors on Metacom Avenue oppose the project citing the zoning rule restricting to one and two family homes, while the permit was issued in July 1956 and objections raised last month. The board also scheduled hearings for Matsanio arts and crafts shop in a basement, Brum to extend commercial zoning on Metacom and Hopeworth, and Vieira auto service expansion on Metacom. Complaints surfaced about nine chicken coops and a potato chip factory operation on nearby parcels.
Today and tomorrow tag days raise funds for the Heart Fund with more than 50 volunteers led by Anthony E. Agatiel conducting a street corner can campaign. Each contributor receives a plastic heart pin.
Town Treasurer Alfred N Nunes criticized the proposed 3.1 million dollar Bristol sewer project arguing it would raise costs for both current sewer users and new area residents. He warned of higher taxes and special assessments, noting land value figures and possible shifts in the townwide burden.
