Republican caucus victory keeps Franklin as Tax Assessor

In a heated Republican caucus, the National India Rubber Company backed James W. Franklin over Charles F. Dimond to retain the Tax Assessor post. About 800 voters crowded the hall as ballots numbered 99 in total with Franklin 227 to Dimond 172, a 65 vote margin. The balloting, conducted amid tight security, saw cross-party voting and a split slate with committees naming Franklin’s supporters. The result preserves Franklin on the ballot for the Democratic caucus Thursday.

Highway Surveyor L H Callan led snow removal with an old road scraper to clear sidewalks and open gutters on main streets. Saturday night cooled and sparked local youth to coast on the snow crust.
