Charles V. Cowing of Gloucester becomes command sailing officer of the U S S Green Pearl at South Portland Maine base succeeding Lt Roy Lewis. A Maine coast lobsterman’s son, Cowing’s career spanned the West Coast Alaska and Europe. His notable rescue of 180 aboard a sinking freighter after a collision near Benevola earned praise. He and Mrs. Cowing live near Union Street in Clark Apartments close to the Spar’s mooring.
