The Bristol Council of Defense reports 278 men in military service from a 10 435 person survey covering 94 86 percent of residents. It lists 1728 vehicles for defense use and 219 children aged one to 15 to be evacuated, with 151 mothers and 44 teachers volunteering to accompany them.
The Bristol Council of Defense reports a successful trial blackout on Wednesday night. Officials note the alarm system failed to reach certain areas, wind direction affected visibility, and mobilization times varied by location.
John Grabert, ex chief of the Fire Department, trains 25 high school boys in handling minor fire equipment. Two weekly drill sessions occur at Portuguese Independent Hall on Wood Street, with a hydrant, 150 feet of hose, two nozzles, and other gear. Next practice is Wednesday at 7 30 p m.

The Highway Department will start sand distribution Monday to aid in extinguishing incendiary bombs. Ten homes will receive a bushel of sand with two pails per household for easy handling and to carry bombs outside. A detailed weekday schedule covers Constitution Catherine streets State Franklin Washington Hope Beach Terrace and nearby areas with Bristol Narrows treated separately.
An afternoon meeting of civilian defense workers discussed expanding staffing at the Franklin Street Report Center. Wom en's Division head Mrs J H Toplin urged more volunteers to cover daily shifts from 8 am to 11 pm, with captains named for each day and substitutes to fill in as needed.
Former Goldenrod Troop and Mariner Ship Vigilant members raised fifty dollars for the Bristol American Red Cross. The gift supports sweaters and socks for Bristol boys serving in the armed forces, reflecting the pledge of duty and service by the Girl Scouts.
Town officials reject a proposed sale of a reversionary interest in land given to Bristol for schooling in 1714. Town Solicitor Capone says as long as Bristol retains a school system the deed’s spirit is preserved. The town will inform the Byfield heirs’ attorney of the ruling.
