First to pass away in Phoenix Souvenir ends in 1818 birth
Simon Smith Bucklin, long prominent Providence resident and former secretary to Henry Clay, died after a short illness at his Union Street home. He was 90 years old and had built wealth through the Economical Life Insurance and Monitor Press ventures, with leadership roles in Louisville clubs and libraries. Funeral held at St. John's Church with interment at Swan Point. A later town council meeting addressed Constitution Street sewer issues and a plan to connect old drains to the Hope Street system, plus a January sermon series by Rev. T Newton Owen on The Church, the Heart of the Town.
