Christmas Eve blizzard cripples New England rail and towns
A severe Christmas storm paralyzed the Rhode Island Suburban line and disrupted telegraph, telephone, and electric services across New England. Widespread damage, with seven inches of snow, flooded tracks and downed poles halted Newport electric cars and trains from Bristol to Providence. Steam substitutes for electric service were used on several routes, and restoration efforts stretched into a week, as churches and businesses reported lower attendance and delayed newspaper deliveries.
