New silver dollar to honor peace era with rising sun design
The mint announces a new silver dollar to be struck around 700 000 pieces before year end in honor of arms reduction. Designed by Anthony de Francisc of New York the coin features Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on a broken sword with an olive branch on the reverse. The background shows rays of a rising sun and the phrases E Pluribus Unum In God We Trust. The coin marks a rare design change since 1878 and may not become pocket money for some time.
