Legibility Tests Favor Lower Case Type Over All Capitals
Tests of printed matter legibility show little difference across typefaces. Lower case text proves 12 percent more legible than all capitals due to familiarity and more distinctive letter forms such as serifs and letter height variations.
Eye catching letters aid rapid reading and recognition
The text explains that legibility depends on letter shapes and line width, noting that readers recognize words as wholes like faces. It suggests an optimal type line length around 8 millimeters or about 3.2 inches for easy reading and quick recognition.
