Maurice C. Smith Jr. reports Bristol backing for a new fabric covered shoe plant with hopes to start small in February or March. Subscriptions exist but are shy of full capital, with 125 to 200 employees planned, about half women. Community pride and merchant support buoy plans despite generous refusals to some investors.
The local Legion seeks donations to fund Christmas dinners for about 300 needy families in town. Last year $3740.9 was spent on 315 dinners. this year at least $350 per dinner is needed to match prior quality. Contributions are urged from residents and listed donors include Makowsky 25.50 Bristol Garden Club 5.00.
At a School Committee meeting George L Howe reports that contractor E Turgeon supervised several repairs to Guiteras Memorial Junior High last month free of charge. A sub-floor drain in the boiler room and an asphalt waterproofing program were authorized or completed to curb leaks.
A copy of a resignation letter to George Ro Fish of Bristol from Bradford Ho Field executive of Narragansett Council Scouts of America expresses regret. The note thanks the Bristol County District Commissioner for over ten years of leadership since 1921 and twenty years in scouting, including new units and public activities, and asks acceptance of the board’s official thanks.
Local letters to the editor praise a plan to establish a recreation room for unemployed men. Supporters cite morale, safer street activity, potential job exchanges, and community donations of chairs, tables, and reading material.
The relief board shelved the council request for resignations of Gerardo Codola and Manuel Hi Fernandes, ruling the matter should be between the council and the directors. The board also discussed clothing aid for children of border line cases to boost school attendance and noted 15 former highway workers were returned to the aid list. John Almeida, recently appointed, attended the meeting.
