The Italian Socialites Women's Club in Bristol launches its first annual charity drive chaired by Mrs. Vasta LaR. Ruggiero. After five successful fund socials, the group aims to raise more this Christmas season to aid welfare agencies and the needy, sending 400 letters to Italian and prominent Bristol residents.
Mrs Mortimer Maddox spoke to the Ladies Benevolent Society of St Michael's Church in Holmes House Barrington recounting her experiences at the Wellesley conference. The group heard reports on proceeds from a Christmas sale and knitting efforts, and decided to fill additional boxes for Miss Ann Burnham in Providence. Refreshments were served by several members.
Mount Hope Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star held a miscellaneous shower for a Bristol hurricane victim after its regular meeting. Plans for the Children's Christmas Party on Friday December 16 were advanced, with Mrs Sarah Ashton chairing the arrangements and Mrs Adeline Klein leading the refreshment committee.
The attendance officer's role at Andrews Memorial High School will be renamed and the committee will discuss the appointment at the December meeting next Monday night. James F Meiggs is expected to be reappointed to the attendance officer berth without opposition.
Santa Claus will visit the Bristol D A R Chapter House to distribute gifts to residents of the Home for Aged Women Guests will enjoy a Christmas tree entertainment and refreshments The program honors two American composers with vocal and piano selections and a Christmas quartet with Mrs Herreshoff Miss Mariel Bullock Mrs Gus A Sullivan and Mrs Frank A Rounds provide the music and Mrs Howard W Church and others host the event
Four Bristol men from the Chavera Agu dasehin Synagogue are named to sponsor a $150,000 state wide campaign aiding oppressed minorities in Germany. The quartet includes Dr Max B Grossman, Robert B Suzman, Louis Levy, and Reuben Gittelman Plan. Alfred Levy, Rudolph Bassing, and Morris Schwartz join the general arrangements committee, aided by Sisterhood members.
A tea and Christmas sale of food and articles is planned by the Rosary Society of St Marys Church in the church auditorium on December 17. Mrs Charles M Connery chairs the arrangements with a committee including Mrs James Connery Mrs John Partington Mrs Marie Vermette Mrs Edward Tramor Mrs Fred Guevremont Miss Sadie Callan Miss Nora F Dwyer Mrs John Martelly Mrs John J Condon Mrs Elizabeth Newbold Miss Minnie Murphy.
Jeremiah W. Romano plans to challenge Anthony J. Nunes for chairman of the Democratic town committee at tonight’s meeting. Romano is backed by Philip Sansone and several Italo-Americans, while some members doubt the insurgent group’s chances. If Romano wins, he would back Sansone for a council berth. Nunes offered no comment beyond his openness to the committee’s decision.
The American Legion Christmas Basket Fund committee asks for urgent donations to meet Christmas needs. Funds determine basket numbers and contents, with prices rising if delayed. Contributions may be sent to Bow Wall at 539 Hope St or left at his office, with many donors already acknowledged.
Town Solicitor Joseph A. Hamill will present at tomorrow night’s Town Council meeting after a conference with railroad officials and Michael J. Di Ciantis of the State Division of Public Utilities. The focus is resuming service on the Providence and Bristol line of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad, halted since the Sept 21 storm causing Bristol-wide inconvenience. Councilman Francois I. de Wolf urged Hamill to seek information for the December 7 session.
Police and fire officials charged to spontaneous combustion the blaze at the Namquit plant of the Collins and Aikman Corporation. The blaze confined to a woolen material bin and was quickly extinguished by volunteer firefighters who answered a general alarm.
