Bristol Rhode Island Bridge Project MOU Hints State Aid Debate
Senator William L. Connery believes a Bristol to Rhode Island island bridge will be reviewed next legislative session. A special committee met at Connery’s home with Connery as chair and Senator Arthur L Sherman as secretary. Representative Fred Coggeshall of Newport joins to study underwater Mount Hope Bay conditions and land surveys. Cost is estimated at 5 million dollars with a one and a half mile span from Ferry Hill to Portsmouth. Public utilities would pay for access and tolls charged to auto and horse traffic. The state would guarantee bonds but not fund construction, relying on toll revenue with a 30 year bond term.
