Parades and troop moves noted in New England and Egypt
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut unions parade in Providence and head to Rocky Point. British India forces bound for Egypt rise to ten thousand, lifting total British troops in the campaign beyond forty thousand. Pacific Mail steamer Lima encounters a fierce storm as a meteor falls near the ship, boiling sea and steam plumes. A New York Sun piece extols Canonchet mansion near Newport, praising an $80,000 grand staircase noted for its flawless polish and intricate carvings, ending abruptly in the tower.

Inscription Found on Rock at Mount Hope Farm
Wioium J. Miner of Bristol, Rhode Island, recounts discovering a small inscription on a marine fossil rock along Mount Hope Bay. The inscription’s origin is uncertain, traced back a century, with claims it was noted by Indians for English visitors. Mr. Arthur Codman later purchased the farm and endorsed the inscription’s copy as accurate. August 22, 1882.
