Frank Sousa of the Ever Readys bested Foxy Marshall of the Olympians in a Wednesday pitching duel, Bristol beating Olympians 5 to 2. The game, held since Monday’s rainout, tightens the race as both teams have three games left in the second half.
The Olympians won the first half and may bypass a playoff if they win again. During the Wednesday game Frank Sousa received a silver loving cap for valuable services to his club. Umpire Mancini stopped play to invite Sousa toward the first base line as manager Frazee and Donald Gladue presented the cup with remarks to the popular athlete.
Collins & Aikman Corp. gains temporary permission to run three shifts in Bristol and Barrington, restoring 244 jobs after code changes cut shifts from two. Chas. B. Rockwell Jr. cites NRA goals, wage increases, and broader textile industry impact while noting ongoing wage and price adjustments under the Recovery Act.
The Bristol Portuguese-American Women's Civic League marked its first anniversary with a banquet at the Hotel Belvedere Tuesday. Rev. Manuel J. Barros officiated as toast master and speakers included Portguese civic figures from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Music by Earl Shean's orchestra followed a performance by the Britto children Evelyn and Josey.
Bristol Yacht Club reports 136 signed entries for the annual regatta set for tomorrow in Bristol Harbor. Leading boats include Dr Truesdale's Twilight and Haffenreffer's Fisher's Island Sound 3 Skidoo in Class A, with numerous other entrants across classes A B and C and newcomers Harlequin and Bostons, among many regional boats and clubs represented.
Miss Frances Mowry of Providence will preach at Union Church on Sunday morning. The annual band concert drew a fair attendance despite weather and the concert was a great musical success. Proceeds from the church ladies food sale enabled officers to clear the outstanding debts and free the church from debt.
The community athletic field fund drive reports 945 dollars collected since starting August 15. The drive ends tonight with reports due at the Hotel Belvedere. Rotary Club led by Dr. M Merriman has 208 dollars. others include Reginald Dimond and several named members. Special gift committee members will continue soliciting beyond house to house canvassing.
Abraham Hochbaum, president of the New England Shoe Mfg Co, says the Bristol plant, moved from Lynn, will reach full capacity by Sept 15 and employ about 250 workers, 95 percent Bristol residents. At start 30 locals in first group. daily output 3600 pairs under blanket code with $14 weekly minimum wage. The move was funded by the Bristol Taxpayers Association.
Local women groups brace for a Monday campaign led by Lieut. Gen. Mrs. A H Flint Jr under the NRA Women’s Division to enroll all women as consumers of NRA retailers. Bristol Garden Club and 50 members pledge support, with clergy and churches backing the drive across Bristol County including Warren and Barrington.
Fire Chief Robert J. Anderson denies being a candidate for postmaster though his name surfaced via incumbent Wm M. Connery. Anderson admitted obtaining an application blank only as a joke. Postmaster Connery contemplates steps after a request from First Assistant Postmaster General O Mahoney to resign. Mahoney said an acting postmaster would be appointed soon for the upcoming four year terms. Reports list eight possible candidates.
With baseball season ending, Ever Ready Engine and Hose Company and Olympian Club of the local YMCA organized horseshoe squads for the state tournament. Ever Ready hosts a Rockwell Park court. YMCA team holds two courts on Hope Street. Captain Donat J. Gladue leads the Ever Ready group with Alec Guevremont Christy Travers Joseph Paull Wilfred Gladue and foreman Wilfred Lemaire. Olympian captain George Magee will select players from Curley Desilets Tony Perry Michael Cappucci Oscar Herzig Guido DeCristofaro William Flynn Larney Bisbano Michael Pasquarelli Eugene Mansi and John Bisbano at 6:30 practice.
