Babbitt Post No 15 G A R marks its 37th anniversary with an evening observance at Grand Army Hall on Hope Street. The post originated August 21 1865 with 39 charter members and at one time reached a larger membership.
Present time shows 34 22 veterans at the Soldiers Home and 13 original Bristoc members. Exercises begin this evening at 0 oclock with a banquet and after dinner program featuring speeches and music. Invitations extended to state and town officials and affiliates. members anticipate a memorial moment honoring members.
James J Duffy of St Thomas Council of Baseball asserts no call with Charles Hughes nor request to cancel a Bristol Town Team game. He says Charles Hughes asked him once to bring the team to Bristol to stage no game, and he denies any such conversation or directives to cancel.
Postmaster Daniel Cogge announces the local post office will close Saturday afternoons starting tomorrow until September. There will be one Saturday morning delivery and the usual morning collection. Mail will be received and dispatched as usual. General Delivery, Stamp, Registry and Money Order departments close at 12 o clock.
Frank Perley Howe died yesterday at his Metacom Avenue home in his 70th year. Born in Philadelphia, he grew up in Bristol and built a notable iron and steel career. He led Cranberry Furnace and related firms and held multiple directorships. Survived by widow Katherine Woodward Howe and two grandchildren. Funeral at Mt Michael's Church Sunday at 2:30 PM.
A special meeting of Bristol Acre No 98 Fraternal Order voted to hold a carnival on the common for a week starting Labor Day. A midway and nightly entertainments are planned. James Holmes chairs the committee with members including Louw Benjamin Fred Brownell Charles Duquette Cornelus Gallagher Weaiham Burke Sr Joseph Edmonds Edward Reese Charles Serbst John Lowney Thomas Branes Mc Morgan John DeCosta Anthons Nunes Frank Walker John Rherman Edward M Kavanaugh Fred Suzman Olver Lemaire Wallace Bergeron and John Powers.
Joseph Warren of 2 Constitution Street rescued Francis Lewis aged four from the water at the foot of Constitution Street after he slipped from the sea wall. The boy reached his home at 50 Thames Street unharmed though shaken by the incident.
