Retirement plea for Superintendent Travers amid illness costs

Committeeman Louis Annarummo urges disability retirement for Superintendent Edward Travers after detailing five year absence costs to the School Department estimated at about 18 000 dollars. Travers has spinal meningitis and was hospitalized July 31, raising doubts about return and prompting calls for leadership amid a 400 000 dollar projected deficit and proposed cost-cutting measures.

Gift to College: Bristol Kaiser Plant Donated for Academic Use

Roger Williams College and Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp have reached a tentative agreement to donate the vacant 19 acre Bristol plant to the college for academic use. Talks began after Kaiser officials sought a future use that avoids decline into an industrial slum and noted local space shortages at the college. The town currently collects 34,220 in property taxes from the plant, which historically yielded over 150,000 in taxes plus a fire alarm system clinic and ambulance services. The plant, founded over a century ago as National India Rubber Co and later part of U S Rubber Co, has been closed and boarded for more than a year. Kaiser plans to consider town interests, including elderly housing, in future use.
