Nearly 1000 people attended the Town Common dance last Friday, according to Anthony E. Agatiello director of playground activities. Prizes awarded in three divisions, plus awards at Veltrans Park, fundraiser totals and a busy awards night program with color guards, songs, and trophy presentations.
At a Bristol Sewer Commission special meeting, approval was given for a proposed sewer line to serve the Hope Valley Homesite Plat developed by Manuel M Corteira on the east side of Hope Street near the new shopping center. The plan extends south toward Chestnut Street and would connect to the Hope Street main once a developer agreement transfers the line to Bristol after plat approval by the Bristol Planning Board.

Boats from Narragansett Bay arrive ahead of the Bristol Club Regatta to be staged Saturday and Sunday with about 200 entrants. Racing begins 2 p m Saturday and 3 p m Sunday with 18 classes crossing the line near the Yacht Club. Spectators can view from Bristol waterfront while the Herreshoff S boats lead the large fleet. Race officials designate a restricted area north of the start line to prevent incidents like the Barrington collision.
Adelbert M Lawrence age 40 drowned near Mt Hope Bridge in a rescue attempt for his four children Linda age 10 and John age 4 were adrift on inner tubes in windy swells. John J Marshall and John Duprey assisted and a shelter boat brought the children ashore unharmed. Rescue squads, a Navy helicopter, skindivers and local volunteers searched the area before the body was recovered about 8 pm and pronounced dead. Lawrence worked for Kaiser Aluminum and had a contracting business reputation in town.
A late night Metacom Avenue accident left William Smith 20, a sailor from Houston, and three others injured. Smith’s car struck a utility pole after mounting the curb and colliding with a Gloria Orefice auto, then stopped 117 feet past the impact. Blair was fined $100 and costs for reckless driving. others were treated on scene and transported to Newport Naval Hospital.
