Pitt Diamond Saga from Fort St. George to French Crown
In 1698 Pitt the elder, governor at Fort St George, bought a huge diamond from Jam Chand for £20,400 rather than £30,000. He later had it cut in England and sold it to the French regent for £135,000, though its true value remained higher. The gem, once 410 carats rough, yielded 186 carats after cutting and adorned France’s royal crowns. From Mrs Penney Port St George Madras.
