The Phoenix prize campaign nears end with a 2000 prize pot and extra cash offers of 50 and 25 dollars for top turn-ins. New entrants are urged to join before 7 pm tomorrow, with nominations closing then and the campaign office open Saturday morning and evening.
Open air concert planned Sunday evening in front of Colt Memorial High School. Director Mrs M Theresa Donovan presents a varied program including Stabat Mater by James C Ruggiero as a cornet solo and selections like Anchors Aweigh Poet and Peasant Overture and La Feria. Large crowds expected in fair weather conditions, with Descriptive Fantasy Childhood Days and Lacome on the bill.
One of the prettiest exhibits by the Bristol Garden Club was hosted at Mrs Ralph F Kinder’s home on a Wednesday afternoon. Members arranged flowers in kitchen containers showing ingenuity with prizes: first to Mrs Samuel Wardwell, second a three way tie among A Rea breaiee, Gack Wi Haffenreffer, and Mrs Wardwell.
Norman Eddy Benard resigned on Wednesday as treasurer and member of the Democratic Town Committee citing dissatisfaction with local political patronage. He resented the ousting of Dr Alfred Merriman as physician at the Rhode Island Soldier's Home and threatened to withdraw from the committee. The resignation becomes effective September 2 after four years of service including three years as treasurer.
The local unit of the Defenders of the Constitution invites the public to Academy hall on Wood Street for its first meeting this Saturday evening. Speakers include Joseph Veneziale US District Attorney Providence, Thomas H Gardiner Kingstown Town Solicitor, and Daniel M Vargas. Four program points include defending the US Constitution, opposing state or cooperative taxation schemes, and promoting laws to end investment charges on electricity and gas.
Miss Elisa M Usher daughter of Mr and Mrs John Usher wed George Seyez Jr son of Mr and Mrs George Seyez at the Congregational Church in Palmer Mass Rev Robert Morson officiated They plan Florida trip afterward with the Seyez family.
Miss Nora E Dwyer is surprised with a purse of money at a Hope Circle No 70 Daughters of Isabella event at St Columban Seminary. She departs tomorrow as delegate to the national convention in Chicago, with Rhode Island and New England representatives traveling by bus and special train via Worcester and Mackinac Island before a Palm House banquet to close.
Bristol Yacht Club holds its annual regatta with at least 17 classes. First start at 2 13 p m, other classes every three minutes. Two prizes offered if five or more boats start per class. Racing under Narragansett Bay rules and North American Racing Union rules. Lunch provided at noon. Regatta committee includes Puacus Angevine DeWalf Foster Tingley Howe.
The newly organized Italo American Club of this town held a meeting at James J Velleca home to close charter memberships. Louis W Cappelli filed articles of incorporation with state officials. Officers named include Lucien Capone president and A F D Angelo vice president with James J Veleca as secretary treasurer. Other incorporators listed. Club aims to promote education social and civic activities for the community. Membership limited to Italian descent men aged 20 to 40, with honorary options for older residents.
Dr Stanley Raymond head of the State Hospital for Mental Diseases at Wrentham told the Rotary Club that state building programs for hospitals and schools fall short. He urged expanded facilities and better treatment, noting overcrowding at Exeter and the need for skilled care and training in mental deficiency.
Radio reports flashed word of the death of famed American humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post. They were on a 500 mile Alaska flight from Fairbanks to Point Barrow when a weather-caused crash occurred around five o'clock last night. The nation reacts with shock.
