Sam Slocum a Bristol figure from the early 1850s is remembered as a jack of all trades scene maker and purveyor of clams and fish to Mrs Cushman on Hope Street He endured endless teasing from street urchins yet kept sobriety and humor He learned many trades and joined in Fourth of July parades with a flamboyant appearance He resembled Rip Van Winkle in appearance and manner and spent much of his days in Bristol before moving to Newport later noted by J A Reid St Louis Aug 1906
