1873 Port Logging Large Coal Cargo and Sea Trade
100 years ago on August 9 1873 the first vessel landed 713 tons of bituminous coal at the port the largest cargo ever recorded. The British schooner Lizzie Webster arrived from Turk's Island with 4100 bushels of salt for A. T. & T. J. Usher while two new Wood Street houses were erected and a new school building nears occupancy for the fall term. The B T A excursion plans include Governor Howard General Burnside and others with visits to Oak Bluffs Vine yard Highlands Katama and Edgartown. A mass temperance meeting drew hundreds to Rocky Point aboard the Canonicus. Reverend DeW Perry and Reverend Calbraith Perry visited with family and other clergymen stayed with them. A noisy Sunday night on Bourns Avenue prompted police action after a loud religiously blasphemous disturbance. A list of students named for the term ending July 3 1873 is provided for various schools.
