Banks of Bristol in the 1800s and their end in 1919
The Bristol banks began with the Bank of Bristol chartered in 1800 with a $50,000 capital. The Commercial Bank started in 1809 and closed in 1869. Legislation in 1919 terminated dormant banks, including Mount Hope, Eagle, Freeman’s, and others. The city hosted multiple banks through 1900 in shared quarters at Rogers Library building.
