At the annual financial town meeting the budget committee approved pay boosts for all and a $25,000 property revaluation program carried by out of town experts. The plan, amended by the planning board, passed amid limited opposition. An attempt to finance the amount by short term borrowing failed after Town Solicitor Capone argued the money came from taxes.
A heated meeting overflowed into the balcony prompting Moderator Dave Ferris to separate the wheat from the chaff. He then invited balcony taxpayers to come downstairs to vote, with some complying and others staying put.
Taxpayers approve a $700 grant to stage the Bristol Fourth of July muster and fund returning the 117 year old Bristol hand pumper from New Bedford to be displayed here. The old tub, built in 1836, will be shown at the Fourth, with the event organized by the Firemen and Fourth of July committees.
The operating budget outlines sewer bonds Series B and 1951 1952 serial notes, tax anticipation notes, wage bonds, and Rockwell School Land notes totaling 682 457 07 with a grand total budget of 812 882 07. It lists projects including road widening drainage improvements sea wall repairs and school land purchases.
Voters approved a record $812,882.07 town budget with $693,457.07 to be raised by taxes, funding pay raises for police and teachers and various town workers. The meeting extended past midnight with broad approval and little trouble, while several proposed increases were defeated or postponed.
Troubled town council discussion centers on a $3000 request to clear and maintain the town dump. Former council member Dr Samuel D Clark blames lack of funds for deterioration and warns of potential lawsuits if action stalls.
St Mary’s Church completes solicitation staff for the annual Catholic Charity Fund Appeal running from Sunday to May 13. Frederick T. Goff chairs the drive with Mrs. George Baldwin secretary and Rev. Clyde Walsh treasurer. Team captains include John B. Burke Rex Flynn Augustine B. James C. Ruggiero ey 2 Sullivan and Norman Vermette with Norman Bel as a worker.
