Bristol Priest Fr Walsh Celebrates First Mass
Plans are underway for Rev. Edward L. Walsh homecoming testimonial dinner May 8 at Hotel Belvedere hosted by the Bristol Colt Alumni Association. Milton King will be toastmaster and Rev Lorenzo C. McCarthy will be principal speaker. Fr Walsh, a 1924 Colt Memorial and Providence College graduate, arrived home from Rome where he was ordained last December. He will celebrate his first solemn high mass at 10 30 in St Mary’s Church.

Sturdy young athletes from Sockanosset School for Boys stage a Thursday evening benefit athletic smoker at Bristol Armory to aid Colt Memorial high school baseball. A battle royal with five little colored performers heads a program of boxing bouts, tin cup and blindfold battles, with xylophone and harmonica numbers and dancing. Edward F. Mullen will referee, Bill McDevitt hosts, and a wrestling match features Mike Pasquarelli and River Cardoza. Proceeds support Colt baseball's return to interscholastic play.

Public Aid Director John G. Des Lauriers announces sixty Bristol youths apply for the president's reforestation army. Town quota is 25. 25 top candidates from large dependent families are chosen and await state relief commission approval. Selected youths face physicals, then mobilization in Providence, training at Fort Adams, eight hour days, six months, pay at least thirty dollars monthly with twenty five sent home, and YMCA Knights of Columbus and Red Cross provided entertainment.

The body of J Ira Shepard, Providence attorney and former resident, was found Sunday on the Portsmouth shoreline near Common Fence Point. Police identified him by clothing, a personal check, a car license, and an identification tag, supporting the theory he jumped from Mt Hope bridge on Dec 30. Witnesses reported a note to his wife and a car left near the bridge, with fingerprints and a fresh paint mark cited as evidence.

The two act operetta Prince Charming presented by the Straight Brothers at Guiteras Memorial School drew strong notices for Vernon A.
