English Poets Laureate Origin and Early History
The origin of the English poet laureate is obscure. Early usage equated laureate with eminent in a literary sense. Medieval kings employed poets attached to households with pensions, not official appointments. Ben Jonson is seen as the first laureate in practice, though the title was not formally conferred. John Dryden received the title by letters patent in 1670, making the post a regular institution.
