Weather, eruption, peat fuel and pork trichina concerns
The National Weather Bureau seeks Southern railroads to collect temperature and rainfall observations for cotton markets. Mount Baker’s eruption alarms settlers in Washington Territory. London adopts compressed peat as cheap fuel, with twenty-two pounds of peat powering a mile of steam. Researchers note cooking often fails to destroy trichina. center temperatures must exceed 170 degrees, rarely achieved in typical cooking, risking infestation.
