Health Officer Dr Samuel D Clark announced a May start for Salk polio immunization for first and second graders in Bristol public and parochial schools. Consent has been high, with private physician contact needed for older children. Clinics will operate at six school sites with nurse and physician teams and a follow up clinic at Rockwell House.
Nelson Beals Civil Defense Director presented an interim report to the town council on plans to house and care for up to 16 000 evacuees from the Providence area in an emergency. The plan lists five zones with headquarters at Rockwell School White Rail St Michael s Parish House St Elizabeth s Auditorium and Cup Defenders Hall and calls for 87 staff around the clock.

A 20 minute power failure disrupted Bristol and parts of Warren around noon. Narragansett Electric crews traced the cause to breaks in two 32,000 volt lines near Warren town yard, affecting power to the Thames Street substation and western Bristol. Production halted due to electrically heated lead pots during the outage.
Seven special resolutions totaling 131200 will be proposed at the April 25 town meeting voted on last night by the town council. Proposals include 5000 for opposing water rate increases and 1200 for a town employee job and salary classification study with professional aid.
