Materials Shortage Strains Bell Telephone Service

The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company reports about 60,000 held orders across its system as wartime demands delay civilian equipment. Manager John F. Shaw says manufacturing of instruments was halted to supply field phones, walkie talkies, and military comms, with 2.5 million new Bell lines added since Pearl Harbor. Central office traffic is heavier than planned, and recovery hinges on war contract terminations and reconversion, with limited hope for quick improvement.
