Bristol officials meet in special session urged by the American Legion to pursue government Quonset huts for veterans housing. Ralph DeLeo cites rapid need, lower unit costs, and projected 30 plus applications, with community input via registered veterans and a plan to present to taxpayers.
The Holy Name Society of St Mary's Church met last night with Rev Joseph Conneely of St Columban's Seminary as speaker. He presented colored films showing Ireland and the ordination of Chinese priests, plus life at St Columban's Seminary in Battle Creek. Conneely spoke on China and Burma work. Thomas H Brynes J Was elected to the social committee to replace Ben Dobrithian. Frederick T Gaff announced Judge Mortimer A Sullivan will headline the Palm Sunday Communion Breakfast with James E Sullivan as toastmaster.
Providence Rhode Island April 9 Blue Cross of Rhode Island reports prepaid hospital care now covers 371000 members a new high up 21000 since February 20 when coverage expanded to all residents. City of Providence leads with 124000 subscribers.
The Bristol School Committee adopted a new salary schedule for all teachers except principals and supervisors, tying pay to years of service and education level. The plan includes provisions on permanent appointment, budget impacts, and automatic raises, with specific scales for elementary junior high and senior high staff, plus allowances and reappointments for administrators and support staff.
A Pontiac driven by Gerard E Bach 24 of 10 Majria street Attleboro collided with a bus at Constitution and Hope streets. Bus driver Alcibinda J Souci 620 Yarmouth Road Hyannis reported the car failed to stop and struck the bus. Police say only the car sustained damage.
Matthew Capone a former major in the Chemical Warfare Service spoke at the Hi Y meeting last evening sharing personal experiences and arguing German hesitation to use gas because it would backfire. Roswell S Bosworth was introduced as the new club advisor replacing Mr Hiuill. Francis Velleca presided in the president’s absence with John Balzano also present.
American Legion Post 6 asks the Town Council to form a committee to study veteran housing and, if needed, call a special town meeting. The idea of using Quonset huts was raised by contractor Ralph De Leo, with an engineer backing the plan. Council to act at April 16 meeting.
Mr and Mrs William H Remeires Sr of 11 Cottage Street were weekend guests of their son William H Remeires Jr in Attleboro Massachusetts. They were surprised with a party honoring their 47th wedding anniversary at Harrys Restaurant Attleboro. Attending were Frank and Evelyn Remeires Albert and Evelyn Remeires Harry and Helen McCaughey and William and Muniel Remeires Ten grandchildren were present.
The Women's Missionary Society of the First Congregational Church will hold its annual meeting on Wednesday afternoon in the General House. A luncheon at one o'clock precedes a business meeting and officer elections. All church women invited. guests include Rev. Charles R. Cooley and Rev. George E Lombard with their wives.
The aged Lafayette toured all 24 states during his 1824 25 voyage, receiving unprecedented American reverence. In a letter to General Lagrange dated January 6 1825 he praises the Union’s prosperity calls liberty’s grand problem solved and hopes to meet again before returning to Paris.
