Bristol School Board Considers Budget Adjustments For 1940

The Bristol school committee, in executive session, nears tentative budget adjustments after the annual town meeting cut. Elmer Mapes to announce actions at the May meeting. The board re elected several members to the Teachers Retirement Board and approved equipment purchases for Andrews Memorial gym.

Muriel Trudell Chosen as Legion Auxiliary Girls State Delegate

Muriel Trudell a Colt Memorial High School junior has been selected by Kearney Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary as its Girls State delegate. She will attend government sessions at the State Capitol tomorrow and Thursday with delegates from other units. The program includes reception by Governor Vanderbilt, House and Senate activities, and a state legislation lecture.

Girls urged to learn machine operation at Bristol schools

Samuel Tallman of Bristol Frocks proposed the Relief Department use six stitching machines to train young women in machine operation. He suggested factories team with schools to provide instructors and materials from waste scraps, at no cost to the schools, to help inexperienced workers meet future wage standards.

Bristol Senator seeks three roads added to state highway system

Senator Bertram W Wall from Bristol sponsors three bills in the State Senate to add Bay View avenue High street north end Washington street to the state highway system each for annual upkeep as well as a lease of Bristol land for Camp King Philip to Narragansett Council of Boy Scouts and an investigation of New England Telephone rates by the director of business regulation. A separate claim seeks 10000 for Catherine Callan estate after death at the State Hospital following oil of wintergreen mistake. Civil Service bill granting non competitive exams to long service state workers is reported killed.

Waterman Denies Threat Involving WPA Sidewalk Project

Frederick W Waterman state director of public works denies threatening to stall a contemplated State WPA sidewalk project unless Bristol pays a bill of 11946.06 owed since 1932. Council officials expect a payment plan at the April 16 meeting and a $1000 upfront payment to show good faith.

Arnold Drever, a popular young Bristol athlete, underwent an appendicitis operation yesterday at Rhode Island Hospital.

John Lawson Dies Suddenly Rhode Island Manufacturer

John Lawson longtime Bristol summer resident and deputy leader in the Hemphill Lawson firm died suddenly at the Providence Biltmore aged 66. He built Hemphill Manufacturing into a major Pawtucket enterprise and later led Lawson Products Inc as president and treasurer. Survived by wife Louisa Hemphill Lawson daughter Mrs Richard Bates son Robert H Lawson six sisters and six grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 230 from Sunset Road Bristol Highlands with Rev Tingley and Sires Parshley officiating.
