After a 70 minute executive session Superintendent Elmer S. Mapes announced the consensus that recent college graduates on the teacher applicant waiting list be given preference for Guiteras Memorial Junior High School positions. The meeting also approved repairs and replacements at several schools and a $25 cap on new curtains for Byfield School.
The Guneras School faces one current vacancy with a possible second in September as the board prepares for the next school year. Preference is expected for men on the waiting list amid several reappointments and wage adjustments following a 4 percent cut.
Miss Audrey Munro of this town will be a soloist and page at the national Children of the American Revolution convention in Washington D C next week. Her sister Roberta will also serve as a page. Mrs Samuel C Wardwell, Bristol Chapter Regent, will attend, as will Miss Cora M Hill former Regent.
The Bristol town board awarded a contract for eight heavy duty tires to Franklin Street Garage, the local agent for United States Rubber Company. The bid totaled 387.14 dollars, highest among eight submitted, with four tires going to Defiance and Ever Ready Companies.
Juniors at Colt Memorial High School will hold their annual promenade on Friday evening May 24 Principal Edward J Fitzgerald announced yesterday. John L Burke class advisor supervises arrangements with officer slate Peter A Fano class president William McCarthy Elsie Weaver Thomas Van Voast Frances Capone Ruth Tattrie William Sisson Willam Simmons Thomas H Byrnes Jr serve on the executive board or as officers.
The Bristol community pursues the Dwyer Memorial Fourth of July Fund toward a $1000 goal. Early generous donations include A Eisenstadt the first local businessman, Bristol Chapter D A R five dollars and various residents giving smaller amounts. The Phoenix urges widespread small contributions to spread support for the celebration and asks 50 cent gifts as a practical way to help. Funds are deposited with Bristol Branch Industrial Trust Company and trustees John G Stewart James F Meiggs and Roswell S Bosworth oversee the effort.
Bristol convenes a testimonial dinner Thursday at Hotel Belvedere for newly appointed Police Chief Anthony J Ferrara. Tickets capped at 200, all sold. Rev C Perrotta will deliver the address, with Governor Green and many state officials among speakers. An orchestra and vocalists will entertain. numerous local officials and friends are invited.
Hope Circle No 70 D of IT reports large advance ticket sales for a whist party at Colt Memorial High School auditorium on April 25. A May Easter Food Sale is planned with a detailed committee for arranging the event. Court Whist prizes awarded to Mrs Knowlton, Mrs Gray, and Mrs Crowley.
Rehearsals are progressing rapidly for the three act comedy Hurburt the Great to be staged by the Mount Carmel Players in the Guiteras Memorial Junior High School auditorium May 6. Joseph F Jannone directs the production, the group’s first endeavor, with Pannone also starring. Cast includes Elmer Dupont Mary Santa Anna De Rosa Mary Rucci Louis Stabile Valentino Alessandro Catherine St Angelo John Marino and Anna E DeAlessio. Subcommittee members include Ralph DeLeo Vincent Saviano Domenic Pasquarelli Stephen Mascena and others with J F Pannone Samuel Bruno Vincent DeLeo Joseph Principe Ruth Ruggier Anna Carmone and Ann E Dalessio assisting.
State Trooper arrested Manuel Mello 24 of 55 Court St and Judge Benjamin F Lindemuth fined him $5 and costs for operating a motorcycle without a license In Fifth District Court yesterday the first session in the Superior Court room since renovations. Other cases set or continued include Thomas Caizzi 241 State Street and Jose Coite Coelho versus Mantel Mello.
The Bristol Portuguese American Women's Civic League voted to run an intensive naturalization drive among local Portuguese women. The committee includes Miss Julia Ferreira chairwoman and several others. Proceeds from the June 7 Cotton Ball at the Bristol Casino will fund clothing for needy children who will soon receive their first Holy Communion.
Applications to enter the Bristol Twilight League came from Olympian Club Ever Ready Fire Company and Bristol Train of Artillery with Guido De Cristofaro representing Defiance Hose Company. Regulations specify five players per club from last year with one pitcher, a second five selected by the Board aiming for balance, and a third five by manager agreement. Officers reelected James F Duffy president Samuel J Smith vice president Frank L Doran treasurer R S Bosworth secretary Edward Menard joined the Board alongside Col Samuel A Hall George W Boutilier and Dr Alan M Poole.
The State Street M E Church will likely keep Rev James F Greer as pastor beyond his June term end. Parishioners unanimously urged District Superintendent Dr William H Bath to secure bishop Charles W Burns of Boston to reappoint him to Bristol.
Colt Memorial High School graduates now attending Brown University Rhode Island College and Providence College have been invited to a Collegiate Hop Friday night in the Colt Auditorium. The event features decorated hall pennants, music by Billy Guevremont and his orchestra, and an arrangements committee led by Michael DeLeo with members Benjamin Hazen and Misses Jean Tobin Genevieve Pagnano Ruth Molasky Laura Balzano and Anna DeRosa. Edward Ezra Levy serves as ex-officio.
The Juniors defeated the Seniors in a Friday debate on social insurance. Team members were Henry Trudell Norman Hibbert and Raymond McNamara for the juniors while Emily Borges Esther Hazen and Joseph Doran spoke for the seniors. The event was sponsored by the school debating club and supervised by Miss Laurine Bradford with Doffienic Ruggieri presiding. Judges included J. Leo Cantwell Mrs. Mary J. Condon and Elmer S. Mapes.
The second weekly bingo party will be held Thursday evening in Masonic Temple. Mt Hope Chapter O E S and Doric Club of St Albans Lodge host with the same committee from amateur nights in charge led by George W. Boutilier as arrangements chairman.
