The PTA will hold a Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday May 19 at Guiteras schoolyard. Riders compete in balancing steering and braking with prizes donated by local merchants. A parade opens the event with best decorated bike prizes.
Hope Circle Daughters of Isabella hosted their 34th annual banquet at the Midway House as John J. Green spoke on Catholicism in New England. Attending were Mrs. John Condon first regent and state regent Mrs. Julia Wallington Ap penaug along with other circle leaders and Rev. Charles C Curran.
Bristol PTA schedules an exchange sale at Colt Memorial High School on Friday April 6 from 9 am to 4 pm with sale held next day. Cochairs Mrs. Fulton M Farrell and Mrs. Mary Allegria report twenty percent of proceeds to PTA and remainder to item contributors. Public urged to donate used clothing nursery equipment skates toys and books.
Mrs Mary Pereira former director of public welfare in Bristol was guest of honor at a Thursday evening party at the White Rail Riding Club. The event sponsored by the State Department of Social Welfare drew social workers and directors from across the state who praised her two years of service. Notables present included Hana McClure Winifred Sylvester Lena McKenna Mrs Sarah Stweeny Margaret Connery Condon and Loretta Connell.
The Newport County Conference will hold an all day meeting at Rogers High School in Newport. Elementary and secondary teachers will not report to their classrooms and will join sessions in two sections while pupils have no classes.
The Zoning Board of Review will move its regular monthly session to the second Thursday of each month. Chairman Elmer E Angell said the change avoids conflicts with the Town Council meeting nights on the first and third Thursdays. The next meeting is Thursday evening April 12 at 8 in the council chamber.
The Women’s Auxiliary to the junior drum corps holds its monthly session tomorrow at 7 30 p m at Mrs Agnes Fojo's home located at 1 East erbrooks avenue.
King Philip Little League plans its first practice Saturday at 9 AM on the common as Guiteras Field remains soft. The season may start May 19 with 36 games across two halves, followed by a championship series and all star selection.
Save the Children launches a three day Bundle Day in Bristol schools starting Monday April 9 part of the Ninth National Children's Clothing Crusade. The drive seeks wearable clothing and shoes to aid children in seven European nations and in American low income areas.
The King Philip Little League, a newly organized junior baseball league, will march in the Fourth of July parade and offer baseball games during the holidays. The group announced at the Fourth of July committee meeting last Friday night. Col. Everett E. McMillan, a Rhode Island National Guard member on the committee, announced the Guard’s two weeks of active service in early July. The committee’s next meeting is set for Friday at 8 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
Town accelerates sewerage work with two contracts proposed to upgrade the plant and outfall. Engineers favor two extra pumps while some commissioners push repairs to the current digester and dewatering unit. The first contract, to T Loranger & Sons, covers the Washington Street relief sewer and emergency pump.
The annual Cub-bub of Narra gansett Council will be held Saturday afternoon and night at North Providence high school with Den mothers Den chiefs and Cub-bers from town Packs 5 and 14 in attendance.
Mr and Mrs Louis Van Thielen own a 1300 acre farm in the heart of Africa near Lake Albert and almost on the equator as they seek a Garden of Eden away from the traditional paradise tropics
A Chicago couple who left for Africa in 1934 have returned after visiting the Belgian Congo. They had lived in Chicago and decided to take a chance on a Congo coffee plantation after Jesse Van Thielen promised his nephew an heirship if he would help. The niece notes the plantation was inherited as a reward for lending aid.
They found Uncle Jesse's plantation smaller than expected but settled there and turned it into cattle pasture when coffee prices fell. The trip to the States aimed to visit pasture grass experimental stations to obtain specimens for their land.
The Van Thieleng live six miles from nearest white neighbors in a scenic upland near Lake Albert. They say isolation brings loneliness but also the pleasure of a self reliant, almost manor lordly life in Africa.
Mr. Van Thielen describes sixty natives on his farm and says he is known as a good boss. He cites low labor turnover and credits listening to complaints and fairness as key to workers’ satisfaction in Africa or Chicago.
The piece describes communication between natives and whites, calling Kiawahili a lingua franca across central Africa. It notes native farm wages about ten cents a day and argues there is ample room for more Europeans and Americans to settle for the favorable climate and farming conditions.
Mr. Van Thielen acts as Mahagi Port agent for Lake Albert steamship line and covers a local agency for an American automobile. The couple live in a comfortable cement and brick house they built themselves in a small brick story. They rely on a smaller plant and even switch off electric lights to run their coffee percolator. His wife sews outfits for natives, though men and women generally gather grass daily for garments.
Fragments describe wild animals spilling onto roads and harming cattle as residents report elephants and lions blocking routes. Van Thielen notes encounters and repeated near misses with animals causing traffic disruptions.
