Advertisements charged one dollar per insertion for three weeks and twenty cents for each additional insertion. Fourteen lines in turgeoise type make a square. Ads continued until forbidden and charged as work. speed overwears taxed ten dollars per year.
In a May Flower sketch a rose in a green vase brightens a poor widow Mrs Stevens and her daughter Mary. Florence defends beauty for the poor, sewing girl Kate and the woman work to care for a sick child, the rose inspiring generosity and hope. A passing gentleman admires the plant and learns of its gift.
A stranger questions a beautiful woman named Florence about a distant figure linked to a sick mother and poverty. The widow mentions Florence once lived abroad and now hints to search at Mrs Carlyle's, No 10. Florence then receives a letter revealing the man’s return and her past acts of kindness.
A man recalls October 1828 in Mobile where a barber with a volatile mood killed a customer. The barber, a drunk man suffering mania, slit a patron’s throat. the narrator watched for signs as the killer raged and attacked others before police restrained him. The account weaves in moral essays and quips from the period.
