A lone traveler in 1834 Illinois endures a violent thunderstorm and two armed outlaws. After a desperate struggle, a blinding lightning bolt kills the attackers and shatters the tree sheltering him, leaving the rider to continue his journey unharmed with his horse.
A Baptist Reporter recounts Christmas Evans championing temperance while a minister in the audience rebels then joins the reform. Beelzebub witnesses mock battles with gin, Bible societies, and temperance leagues as tempers rise and Mr. W. joins the pledge at last.
