Judge Sherman presided in the Court of Common Pleas as sessions began on Tuesday. In Newport Kentucky last evening a mob of about thirty men seized Willum S Bailey's print shop and carried off a printer’s formes in a bid to destroy the paper. The agitators demanded Bailey leave town or face retaliation while police allegedly stood by. Bailey's family worked the paper with Bailey writing, daughters setting type, and sons operating the press.
A boy eight or nine years old shot and killed a twelve year old girl in Montgomery county near Valley Forge. He claimed the gun went off accidentally, then said he was angry at her and killed her after a quarrel at school. Authorities investigated the incident across Chester county line.
Letters from the City of Mexico report the execution of Orinund Chase a 23 year old American who managed the Tepic sawmill and defended the British consulate from federalists. He was arrested by Gen Marques and found dead by hanging, shot in the night on orders to deter foreigners. His wife and child are with British Vice Consul Alsopp who assisted them.
A legislative committee tests a State Liquor Agent Burnham for fraud in liquor mixing. Evidence shows Burnham and clerk Brookhouse conspired with distillers John Felton & Co to adulterate brandy, using burnt sugar and alcohol to double profits. Burnham resigned after details emerged.
Fire at Pembroke Cotton Mills in Simcork Village caused total destruction of the mill and an adjacent picker and counting machine on the opposite bank. The blaze and a bridge were wrecked, with a loss estimated at 130000. Insurance ranged from 70000 to 90000, mainly held by Massachusetts and Rhode Island firms. Principal owners included Weld and Minot, Ros Howe, W Rubberton, and M Pope of Boston. 250 workers were left unemployed.
Between 11 and 12 last night a freight train of forty one cars derailed at the city entrance on the heavy grade near Van Voort Street. The locomotive, a large engine, overturned at the corner and eight freight cars shattered, contents scattered. The rest of the train damaged by concussion. No lives were lost and no one injured.
Haven News reports conductor Fuller on a New Haven railroad train found a woman in a trance-like state.
