A forged letter of introduction from W. W. Corcoran and a fake appeal fund swindled several Congress members in Washington. The con artist, well dressed, collected donations from $5 to $50 with Corcoran as the presumed benefactor. Corcoran denied knowledge, the forged letters were exposed, and the rogue vanished with likely hundreds in his pockets. Gerrit Smith contributed $50 as a named victim.
A New Jersey town staged a dramatic scene after the vote count in a rum shop. The anti prohibition candidates led, and the host kissed the ballot box in celebration, drawing cheers and jokes about patriotic fervor and liquor.
