An 1845 letter from Tacitus hand Recall aboard describes the Tacitus wreck off a Harvey island near Tahiti. The ship dragged anchors in a gale, struck a reef, and the crew abandoned ship at night with no loss of life. Captain and officers praised for discipline. The wreck to be sold for underwriters.
The narrator recounts a daylight pursuit by a pirate schooner off Africa while storming against odds. With ten crew and heavy cargo, the crew repels boarding attempts using rifles, muskets, and improvised tactics then sheds cargo to gain wind and outpace the pirate. The clash ends as the pirate falls behind and the barque completes its voyage.
A Boston port crisis letter from June 18 1774 sends Bristol to join the Committee of Correspondence. It urges adoption of a Non-Consumption Covenant and asks Bristol to spread the plan to curb British measures. Bristol voters pledged 48 pounds 4 shillings for Boston relief and the funds were sent via Joseph Russell to Boston authorities.
