Washingtons Sabbath order amid New York siege
A fragment from Sparks Washington writings cites an August 3 1776 general order issued as troops near New York City pause for worship and rest. It rebukes profane swearing, urges moral conduct, and highlights the army’s discipline and religious sanction. Also mentions local secession rumors in Tiverton and naval captures near Holmes Hole.

Lapar Pips smoke pipe on war steamer at Washington
A novelty item the smoke pipe of the new war steamer was mounted in Washington on Saturday. Two men walked through it while it lay horizontal on the wharf, arms raised, without touching the pipe walls. The tube telescopes to slide in and out, allowing concealment from an enemy. Other advantages are noted.
