Publication details for The Bristol Phenix at No 7 Bradford Street Bristol Rhode Island by W H S Bayley with subscription prices three per annum payable in advance and ad rates for religious obituary and political notices.
The Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry offers premiums in 1859 for the largest crops of Indian corn carrots turnips beets onions and more raised on specified acreages with cost per bushel considered. Prizes include 15 10 5 for corn and 35 for parsnips plus rewards for experiments in land improvement bee management lime manure and animal production. Submissions due December 31 1859.
The act on dogs approved by the Governor takes effect immediately. It requires yearly dog registration by April 30, collar display of owner and number, and posting of licensed dogs. Officers may destroy dogs at large and receive fifty cents per dog. penalties cover poison exposure, theft of licenses, and damages from dogs. Towns may enact bylaws with fines up to ten dollars, and the London Daily Standard notes a Boston disturbance during the Legislature.
The Wa bash Indiana Intelligencer details the conviction of a man named Joy for burning to death his four month old infant in 1857. The crime followed threats to his wife and other children and was only discovered late. The infant’s death sentence was mitigated by the testimony of Joy’s young daughter. Additionally a Connecticut election correction reports fifty erroneous Republican votes found in New Haven altering county majorities.
A London merchant disputes an account with a Quaker who remains calm under abuse. The Quaker’s rule to keep his voice in a fixed key helps him master temper. A tavern tale of Dr. Adam Clark and pork grace follows, then a hunter’s joke about cannon balls and a Maine liquor law threat to a sweetheart.

Seven men from different areas gather at midnight beneath a cypress in Laurel Swamp South Carolina in 177-. They vow mutual brotherhood and crime to exterminate Whigs. They name seven targets by ballot and pledge to pursue them with brutal resolve, then disperse as embers fade.
In Laurelwood a tense night unfolds as Tory raiders press the isolated Burnside residence. Jessie Burnside and her companions endure threats while Tom Hutter Blin ko and a rallying stalwart force defend the house with muskets and a blunderbuss. Podijah Makepesco and Paul Hazelhurst join the defense as danger looms and rescue arrives moments before a full assault.
In Laurelwood a four-person defense fights back invaders pressing through windows and doors. Tom Hutter and Jessie Burnside lead courage as Paul Hazelhurst aids and tends wounds. The Tory assault ends with retreat into trees while defenders vow to protect liberty and home.
