A distraught Wilton rises to rebuke his peers at a party hosted by a firm, recounting a brother’s ruin from alcohol and his own guilt in a reckless wine-fueled prank. The narrative condemns temptations of drink while detailing a sober resolve among companions.
The article extols family order and regularity as the cornerstone of prosperity and happiness. A husband enjoys a well run home with a courteous wife, while sons become steady men and daughters, trained by a devoted mother, become valuable wives and mothers themselves.
An assortment of late 19th century humor and social anecdotes including a Mississippian tale of a Virginian and a rude “second family” joke, Count d Orsay’s coat invention anecdote, a lunatic with a knife at a grindstone, a Vermont marriage prayer scene, and a sentimental Far West query about Indigenous imagery.
Passed at the January Session in Providence 1867 this act adds sections to Chapter 216 and Chapter 307. It strengthens penalties for inducing miscarriage and for aiding abortion including intent to procure miscarriage with prison terms from one to seven years. It allows murder indictments to include related offenses and repeals conflicting acts. It also empowers police and county officers to suppress unlawful assemblies, prostitution, and liquor violations with penalties and immediate effect.
