National Parks Win Major Two Year Drive 1922 23
In 1922 and 1923 the national park system rode a wave of public support led by the National Parks Association and the General Federation of Women's Clubs securing large appropriations and several policy victories. Secretary Hubert Work, replacing Fall, guides an emphasis on open policy and permanent improvements as Director Mather remains a steadfast advocate. The era sees expanded park boundaries, new roads, camps, and year round status for several parks, plus a push to protect parks from private and commercial use. Park attendance climbs with 1922 records, and total park spending nears $1.8 million in permanent improvements with progress on roads and facilities across many sites.
