Police say night officer Joseph White was murdered in an alley behind a grocery store after failing to return from rounds around 1 am. The motive linked to a series of petty thefts and a burglary at the store, with White thought to have confronted burglars and been killed.
Theodore Birch, marshal of Benbow City, jailed his wife claiming she nagged him and interfered with his patrol duties. He said he had the right to lock her up to teach her to stay home after an incident at a concert hall. A deputized friend carried the screaming woman to jail.
The 1911 State Sunday School convention closed in Olney with a 3000-strong parade and a keynote by Dr William Eva of Moody Bible Institute. Officers elected include Vernon of Olney as president, Alexander Anderson of Polo as VP, F D Everett of Highland Park as treasurer, and W B Jacobs as general secretary. New executive members are A H Milla Decatur, H T Laty Kewanee, J B SikSing Broadland, R C Willis Toledo, and J H Mulford Peoria.
Joliet Senior Glenn Smith admits fabricating a prize story for the year book and is expelled by Superintendent Brown. The confession reveals "Angela's Muslin Gown" duplicated from "Her Class Day Gown" by Charles Ware Bassett and published in St Nicholas.
Frank D Fox of Peoria elected president at Quincy gathering. The Winnolg Elks adjourned in Quincy naming next year’s convention site and confirming officers including Vice President Harry Herriman Olney Secretary Fred A Farnum Springfield Treasurer C H Williamson Quincy and Executive Committee Sam Ryerson Rock Island J Callendar Galesburg and Dr Snell Litchfield. Bylaws allow a state officer to serve more than one term.
In Chicago Mrs Jank Lewandowski died after a beating by her husband as he returned home to find supper ready? Police say the assault caused fatal injuries. The incident follows a fire destroying a Rockford storage warehouse owned by C E Soverign & Co with about $5000 loss. Factory spaces for Smith 4 Berger Baby Carriage and Soverign Neckyoke Co occupied by Building. About thirty families affected by the blaze.
James F. Nash of Chicago died from injuries after accidentally stepping in front of a train on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad while staying with friends in Sterling. He died at Whiteside Hospital and his body was shipped to Chicago for burial.
A series of brief incidents are reported from Illinois towns. Louis Plucker, an electrician from Cleveland, drowned in the Fox River near Algonquin while canoeing. Robert P Johnston Jr killed himself in the Leland Hotel. Glen Lawrence, teased for his stutter, died by suicide. Robbers looted Iron Miley’s store in Graymont, netting $35. Charles Miller, near Dahlgren, was killed by a westbound freight. Hosea Taylor pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Vienna. A $15000 suit was filed in Tazewell County over a Bloomington elopement and later marriage deception involving Miss Lillian Bishop and others.
The Central Christian Church of Peoria unveiled a new 64 by 24 by 12 foot structure completed in under ten hours with all work donated locally. Rev. W F Turner led a praise service as telegrams poured in from Christian churches nationwide celebrating the accomplished rapid build.
Kate Felker of Evansville Indiana and Dora Felker Lind who was adopted by a farmer, have learned each other is alive after six years apart. Dora, once at Evansville orphanage in 1904, moved to Illinois and married last year. A newspaper ad led to the meeting Sunday near Carmi when the sisters, separated as children, reunited for the first time since their parents died.
The will of the late S. E. King of Ottawa, a major Otter Tail County landowner, was filed for probate in Fergus Falls. He owned 5185 acres valued at 128,424 with no children and left most of the property to educational causes, including 60000 for a high school, 50000 for a Y M C A building, 40000 for an Ottawa hospital, and a trustee funded fund for educating worthy young men. A nephew receives 100000 and other heirs 10000 each.
In Davis v Illinois Central Railroad the Ill inois Railroad and Warehouse Commission holds the railroad must receive shipments in carload lots at the door and, for perishable goods, place them in refrigerator depots or heated depots in cold weather. If the shipper insists, this is an extra favor and the railroad may charge a reasonable fee not exceeding 1 cent per hundred pounds.
The 1910 strawberry crop generated about 250000 dollars for Pulaski County Illinois strawberry district. Villa Ridge shipped 130 cars and Pulaski nearly 100 cars, with most fruit sold to Chicago. Prices ranged from 1.50 to 2.50 on the track and profits funded purchases like automobiles.
Illinois Central baggage man from Pinckneyville to Eldorado shot the fireman in the leg and bluffed the crew until Eldorado. He then attempted to shoot the night operator. The night marshal detained him and jailed him. Hilsabeck, long employed as baggage man, has a family in Pinckneyville and is believed to have temporarily deranged.
Mrs Otto Arndt, 29, of Staunton, committed suicide by shooting herself in the temple. Police report the act occurred in Staunton, with no accomplices or witnesses noted.
A severe quake struck Avellino and surrounding villages, killing dozens and injuring many. Reports from Calitri San Sossio Castelbaronia Calabritto and Chianciano describe deaths, floods and gas release. The king and queen were en route on a special train to aid the scene.
A heavy rain and wind storm swept St Louis causing unroofed buildings and fires from lightning. Reports indicate severe weather across Arkansas Mississippi and West Tennessee with floods and a tornado in Pine Bluff and Hot Springs. One death reported near Fit Smith Arkansas, and major crop losses expected including early corn and cotton.
Announcement from Kansas City by Thomas Priestley of Bartlesville states twenty large Oklahoma oil producers will merge into one company with refineries and pipelines. The new firm would control wells producing 20 000 barrels of oil daily. In Ohio a 14 year old boy Jacob Tingerman died after being struck by a train in North Baltimore. injuries included broken back neck arm and leg.
After fifteen months abroad Theodore Roosevelt and family sailed from Southampton June 10 aboard the Kalgerin Auguste Victoria to return to the United States. The former president led an African expedition, met world leaders, spoke at the Sorbonne and Nobel committee, and attended King Edward VII’s funeral in London as special American ambassador.
As returns come in Carroll Rep and Porter Dem seem set to win Iowa governor nominations. Congress nominees span districts with progressives dominant. Prouty leads Hull by about 1,100 in the Seventh, while Smith gains a surprising Ninth District majority.
Senator Cullom of Illinois presents charges questioning Senator William Lorimer's right to sit in the Senate. The charges, printed in the Congressional Record, go to the Privileges and Elections Committee. They come via Clifford W. Barnes, president of the Legislative Voters League of Illinois, claiming corrupt methods in the state legislature.
