Hasselbachers Celebrate Anniversaries in Galesburg

December 18 marks a family milestone at the L. Hasselbacher home. Mary Letterman, born 1856, married Ludwig Hasselbacher in 1877. Last Friday the couple celebrated both Mrs Hasselbacher's birthday and their wedding anniversary with a visit to Galesburg, where they dined with daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Florian Kingert and Mrs Dave Hasselbacher at Mrs Catherine Awl's home.

S P Bower Buried With Military Honors

Full military honors were paid to Simon Peter Bower, Civil War veteran, at a Brimfield service conducted by Rev. R. W. Newell. The American Legion escorted the casket, with a rifle salute and Taps, as old family ties, a 93 year life, two Colorado trips, and a large clan of descendants were noted in a Union church grave ceremony.

Christmas activities highlighted in French Grove area

Vacationing Paul Shiffer visits Knox and several households host Saturday callers. The Improvement and Missionary Society plans a December 29 holiday party at the McClellan home. Grace school prepares a Christmas program with piano duets, songs, recitations, and skits. Rural schools end term with jolly Christmas parties and new electric lighting in a country school chamber excites teachers and pupils.

Farm Home Destroyed By Night Fire

A night blaze around midnight destroyed the farm home of Wilbur Challacumbe north and east of Ford's Corner. Fire engines arrived after the house was already gone, only allowing the occupants to escape with a few household articles as flames consumed the second floor.

Bernice Kingdon Honored At Class Party

Senior girls hosted a potluck at Ruth Tucker's home Friday evening for Bernice Kingdon who will move with her parents to Arizona. Attendees included Arlene Place Lucille McDorough Dorothy Weianer Maxine McCartney Irene German Roberta Bowman and Ruth Packer. They gave a memory book recalling three and a half years of high school before heading to Elmwood for the basketball game.

We Win At Elmwood Defeat in Rough Season Game

The tough Elmwood game ended with our boys leading 33 to 25 after a foul line scoring surge. The second team also won with a strong performance, finishing 17 to 9.

Basketball Schedule and Home Away Dates Listed

Dunlap Tournament bounds the late January slate with games at Chillicothe Glasford Elmwood Princeville Wyoming Maquona and Yates City along with a February run through Glasford Chillicothe and a pair of Dunlap games. W Herrington of Topeka Kansas visited with his sister Minnie Lawson and uncle W T Cowley marking his first trip here in seven years.

Supervisors Gift Reduces County Tax Rate This Year

The board of supervisors presented a tax relief of about 31 cents per hundred dollars. Last year the rate paid on $100 was $6.08, this year it drops to 31 cents. The county had a December 1, 1935 overdraft near $15,000, which is cleared. The December 1, 1936 cash balance is $96,001.03, and with the overdraft yields a projected saving of $111,754.21 for the year. The board expects taxpayer gratitude.

Recent Marriages Collins Tucker in Knoxville

The marriage of Miss Doria Collins and Wilbur Tucker took place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday December 12, 1936, in Knoxville officiated by Rev. Ballew. Cousins Lylith Kenepp and Verne Colbernton attended the couple. Mrs. Tucker is the youngest daughter of Mrs. Harvey Collins of Cahinda, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Tucker of Brimfield. The newlyweds are visiting at the bride’s sisters in Manhattan, Illinois.

Cox Maher Wedding Ties Elmwood Family Figures

A marriage in Wyoming linked families of Elmwood as Daniel Maher son of Mrs. Cora Maher and Miss Lucille Cox wed in a home ceremony on Saturday December 12. Dr B G Carpenter officiated the single ring service and the couple plan to reside with the groom's mother in Elmwood. He works for Caterpillar Tractor in Peoria.

Death of Mrs Edward Worcester Shocks Worcester Friends

Maxine Lyons Worcester also known as Mrs Holland Learned received a telegram Monday morning announcing the death of Mrs Edward Worcester. She had battled a long illness at a Sanatorium in Texas and remained cheerful and hopeful amid her fading strength. Letters from Illinois friends were deeply meaningful to her, and she appreciated them greatly.

Former Canton business man dies at home

John H. Willstead aged 53 died at his Canton residence after a yearlong illness. Born November 11, 1883 he was the son of Rev. Thomas and Maude Essex Willstead and lived in Canton twenty six years. He operated a grocery store and later was a traveling salesman. Survived by wife Margaret Tayior Wilstead and one daughter Mrs. Leaman Fell of Canton, three sisters and a brother Harry A. of SGermor. Funeral services were held Wednesday with burial in Greenwood cemetery Canton.

Community Christmas Sing Draws Town Crowd

Tonight the American Legion hosts a community Christmas sing, expecting four to five hundred children with parents in town. Bring the words to three carols Silent Night Little Town of Bethlehem and It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, or rely on memory. Program starts at 7:30 with Santa Claus arrival to close the evening.
