The entry records commodity prices for December 9, 1897 with corn 21 oats 20 wheat 85 butter 15 eggs 15 hog 310 coal 4c a bushel. It notes J P Melatyre selling West End Grocery to C W Winne and Peter Cahil shipping a carload of steers to Chicago at about 158 lbs each. December 13, 1907 shows prices corn 47 oats 46 wheat 48 butter 20 eggs 25 hogs 370.

Alumni Plan Evening of Fun for Old Graduates

A note in the paper this week invites all old graduates to a potluck supper, singing, carols and record dancing. Younger alumni seek to revitalize the organization with an evening of lively activities and camaraderie.

The Produce Counter In 1956 American Diet

New York reports that in 1956 the average U S consumer ate about 320 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, more than a fifth of total food. Consumers bought two pounds of fresh produce for every pound of processed goods as markets show about 285 varieties. There are thousands of named varieties of apples grapes peaches and potatoes but only a small number are commercially important.

Brimfield team won grain with plaque while poultry top five squads included Brimfield Metamora Roanoke Prunceville and Limestone. Kilogg Family Hosts Gatherings Amid Mission News

French Grove resident David Oakes and roommate Sam Pawlak from the University of Allinois stayed home for the weekend. Rev Vernon Mortenson of The Synogelical Alliance Mission office in Chicago spoke at the recommissioning service for Gertrudt Kilogg at Laura Church Sunday evening, with over eight guests at the Kellogg home. Gertrude Kilogg shared mission work notes from South Africa and attended family events with Eldon Morey and family in London Mills.

Few Hundred Longhorn Survivors in Private Paddocks and Zoos

Washington reports the longhorn cattle breed, once central to American ranching, now survives in private paddocks refuges and zoos. Descended from 1680 Spanish cattle, the big-boned animals weighed up to 1,600 pounds with eight-foot horns. The breed, once common, remains a historical curiosity as visitors view a few hundred individuals.

Local resident Rodney Carson dies in town hospital

Rodney Dean Carson of 716 North Sixth Street Monmouth died Wednesday morning at Town East Veterans Hospital after a three day illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at Turnbull Funeral Home with burial in Monmouth Cemetery. Born January 1, 1892 to Howard and May Carono, he married May 6, 1914 at Vandalia to Woby Herman. He lived in Chicago St Louis and Monmouth before returning to Monmouth 7 years ago. He served as superintendent of Monmouth Cemetery and was active in Masonic groups. He was past president of the Monmouth Cemetery Association and secretary of its group at his death, also held leadership roles in the Canton 40 and 8 organizations and the American Legion Post at Canton. His wife and son K. D. Carson survive.
