Peoria hotel destroyed by fire and community Christmas plans

From The Files year 1896 to 1916 notes show the Peoria House fire on Thursday night, Santa in town for a Community Christmas program, a Methodist Ladies Aid sale of papers for 58.30, and a high school Juniors event with door receipts of 83.00. The entries also record crop prices, local events, and ongoing club plans as winter begins.

Christmas Seals Sparked County Health Drive

In 1904 Denmark born Christmas seals inspired Riis to report their use to fund tuberculosis relief. By 1907 Delaware issued stamps to support a shelter, then spread nationwide. The seals funded county nursing service dental and chest clinics and area health programs.

French Grove Wm Edward Carter is out of school with chickenpox and many local families hosted Thanksgiving gatherings. Guests included the Carrolls Verne Shaffer and Alex Rees at Mrs Gertrude Suissler, and Rev Charles Thorne with family at Thanksgiving dinner. Edith Carter, daughter of Mrs Fairy Carter and Dale Welch, married at Princeville and now visiting Iowa as they celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary.

Laura church supper and bazaar planned for Friday evening December 1. Local residents including Mr and Mrs Wm Jones and Mr and Mrs Charles Jaques attended events in Chicago and guests from Manito Fort Madison and Peoria are noted. Laura Winners 4 H club led by W Jones features 65 head of beef calves and 60 head being fed as the club’s members celebrate a busy season with banquets and visits.

Laura Winners 4-8 club starts year with oyster supper

The Laura Winners 4-8 club began its year with an oyster supper on Friday November 7 at the Laura Grange hall. Enrollment reached 56, making it the second largest in the state. Emma Jaques was named assistant leader due to high membership. Officers elected: President Donald Cluskey, vice president Joe Carroll, secretary-treasurer Charlotte Muller, reporter Roban Kellogg, recreation chairman Lois Barrett. A Christmas party is planned for December with a grab bag gift from each member. Rith Reed heads the refreshment committee.

Maxwell-Wells Wedding in Yates City at Methodist Manse

Lois Eileen Maxwell and Voris W Wells were married Wednesday evening at the Elmwood Methodist manse with Rev. Van Horn officiating. The couple, graduates of 1936 and 1935, will reside in Florence Corbin home after December 1, with Carl Maxwell and family in attendance. The Wells family previously lived in town before moving to Yates City.

Ninetyfifth Birthday Celebrated In California

Mrs E J Robinson marked her ninety fifth birthday with a daylong party at 1399 West Thirtieth Street in California. Her sister Mrs S H Snyder aged 87 attended along with brother Samuel Eslinger 91 who traveled from the east. Daughters and sons totaling three sons four daughters ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren joined in the celebration with several other relatives from Los Angeles and Peoria.

Junior Poultry Show a Great Community Event

Leo Vogel and his wife proprietors of the Vogel hatchery celebrate a successful Junior Poultry Show at Elmwood last week. Fifty six exhibitors received 25 spring chicks each, with 232 on display. prizes awarded to seven top exhibitors and 25 pounds of Conuey seed for next eight placers. Judges from Donkey Feeds and Salisbury labs praised the birds’ condition, and the Vogels thank participants and parents for support of this first show.
